The Australian Women’s Water Polo team have recorded back to back victories at the FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament in Texas, with a convincing 11-2 win over Canada.

The last time the two sides met, at the six nation tournament in Rio last November, it was a very different result with the sides playing out a six-all draw.

The Aussies were keen to avoid a repeat of the stalemate as they continue to build towards the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Goalkeeper Kelsey Wakefield – who is aiming for her first Olympic Games in Rio – put in a strong performance, with the 24 year-old notching up 16 saves in goal.

“We had a poor defensive game against China yesterday so we really wanted to focus on that today,” she said.

“I think we did a really good job, we were able to structure our defence well and that allowed us to really build in our attack and have really good game overall.”

The Stingers led from the outset and opened up a two goal advantage at quarter-time before stretching their lead over the remainder of the match. Impressively, the team also managed to keep the Canadians scoreless throughout the second half.

WAIS scholarship athlete Glencora McGhie continued her impressive goal-scoring form for the Australians, finding the back of the cage to take her tournament tally to six goals, whilst Gemma Beadsworth and Zoe Arancini were also both in action for the Stingers.

The next game for Australia will see them face Brazil tomorrow (Friday 19 February) at 10:20am Perth time. For live streaming of the game visit click here.
