Last Thursday the Aussie Sharks, men’s water polo squad was named ahead of the upcoming FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament on the Gold Coast.

The squad consists of six WAIS athletes in Nick Elphick, Andrew Ford, George Ford, Luke Pavillard, Tim Putt and Ed Slade.

With several athletes unavailable due to playing commitments in Europe and the USA, the competition provides a great opportunity for the new look, young Australian team to experience competing at an international level in front of a home crowd.

Sharks Head Coach, Elvis Fatovic said “it’s an opportunity for many of our players to step up and take on a new challenge.”

“Most of the teams that will be visiting we know will be tough. We can expect Japan to be the same strong side we faced at the Olympic Games, we also know the USA will be tough and I believe Kazakhstan will have a reasonable team.”

“We don’t know exactly what to expect from China as we haven’t seen a lot from them. But then there is New Zealand who we are very familiar with after a few training sessions with them earlier in the year. All round it will be exciting competition for the teams and spectators.”

The Aussie Sharks will take on the USA, China, Japan, New Zealand and Kazakhstan where the top ranked sides will qualify to compete at the FINA World League Final in Russia in June.

With the Intercontinental Tournament set to begin on the 25th of April the Aussie Sharks will now head over to the Gold Coast to begin their final preparations.
