Thundersticks Showing Strong AHL Form
The WA Thundersticks sit in second place following three rounds of the 2011 AHL Championships.
After a first up defeat at the hands of Queensland (3-1), the Thundersticks have bounced back to record wins over South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Needing a win to kick start their 2011 campaign, the Thundersticks shot out to a fast start against South Australia with AIS-WAIS athlete and Kookaburras representative Fergus Kavanagh striking in just the second minute, before Grant Schubert doubled the advantage on four minutes.
WA ensured there would be no come back in the 40thminute with Schubert continuing his rich vain of goal scoring form with his second for the match, consolidating a 3-0 win for the Thundersticks.
The Thundersticks moved up a gear in their round three AHL fixture with the Northern Territory, recording a convincing 5-1 victory in Darwin.
After a quiet opening 15 minute period, the game sprung to life on 18 minutes when WA took the lead through a Sam Pike goal. AIS-WAIS scholarship holder Trent Mitton extended the margin on 29 minutes, before Travis Carroll looked to make a match of it, halving WA’s advantage at the half-way point.
Pike quelled any doubts over WA’s second AHL win, completing his hattrick with two quick goals, before Kavanagh sealed a 5-1 victory for the Thundersticks with a late goal that cemented WA’s position in the top two.
