Jesse Phillips (Rivervale) and Steve Bird (Mt Pleasant) rounded out their post World Championship tour in style over the weekend with a highly credible seventh place in the prestigious Fish Marathon in South Africa over 84km.
In a star studded field of almost 2000 paddlers that saw former World Marathon Champions Hank McGregor and Grant Van Der Walt record a come from behind win over World Marathon Championship medallist Len Jenkins and ocean racing specialist Matt Bouman.
In third place was dual K1 1000m World Champion Max Hoff and Stefan Stiefenhoefer. Phillips and Bird showed their versatility with a strong showing that saw them come in 43 seconds ahead of French Wild Water World Champions Loic Vinysale and Quentin Bonnetain. The King of the Cape was the third round of the Australian Ocean Racing Series over the weekend from Smith’s Beach Yallingup to Bunkers Bay. A solid swell with 10 knot SW wind gave competitors the perfect downwind run with series leader Ben Allen from Qld winning the event with Reece Baker (Marmion) about 90 seconds behind in second place.
