Winter Olympians Lucas Mata and David Mari have set a new personal best in finishing 22nd in the two-man bobsled at the PyeongChang Games in Korea.
The dynamic duo hit a career best in their third run, clocking 49.87sec for a combined total of 2:29.79min.
PyeongChang is a second Winter Games for pilot Lucas Mata, who switched from brakeman in the four-man bobsled after his debut in Sochi four years ago.
Mari was tempted by the sport after signing up for a trail day and discovering his athletic traits were well-suited to the discipline.
The Aussie boys opened with a time of 49.88 and dipped to 50.04 in their second run. The pair saved their best for last however, recording a fastest ever time in tandem on the biggest sporting stage of them all.
The gold medal was won by Canada ahead of Germany with Latvia rounding out the podium.
The boys will next be in action in the four-man heats, which commence on February 24. They will be joined by Lachlan Reidy and Hayden Smith in the four-man competition.
Cross-country skier Jessica Yeaton has followed up her opening effort in the women’s 7.5km + 7.5km Skiathlon with a 48thrank in the Sprint Classic, a 41st in the 10km Free and will today tackle the Team Sprint Free along with Barbara Jezersek.
