Perth twins Mishela and Marijana Dimoska recently completed a successful campaign at the Australian Open Karate Championships in Sydney.
The sisters – who this month celebrated their 20th birthday – met in the final of both the open and U21 divisions, sharing the titles between them.
Marijana earned a national title win in the U21 decider with Mishela reversing the result in the open division final.
The Macedonian born pair have previously represented their homeland at World Championship level but having relocated to Western Australia, are now focussed on representing their adopted country at Olympic level, with Karate one of five sports introduced or reinstated for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Following their success at the Australian Open, the girls have now earned selection to compete for Australia at this month’s Oceania Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
Both Mishela and Marijana specialise in the Kata discipline of Karate, which assigns competitors a red or blue belt and uses a flag system to adjudicate the speed and power of a contestants’ technique.
Competitors take turn in demonstrating their kata which is assessed by a panel of five judges, who raise either a red or blue flag, with the winner determined by the athlete who has more of their flag colour elevated.
