WA Teams Win Medals at NWPL Finals Series
Fremantle’s National Water Polo League teams picked up medals in the men’s and women’s finals series contested in Sydney over the weekend.
There was a silver medal for the Fremantle Mariners, after they were defeated in a penalty shoot-out against the Sydney Uni Lions, whilst the Fremantle Marlins earned bronze, after an 11-10 win over Drummoyne.
WA Olympian Joel Swift netted a last minute goal for the Mariners to take their grand-final into a deciding penalty shoot-out.
Lions’ goalkeeper Anthony Hrysanthos justified his awarding of the Finals MVP by playing a starring role in the shoot-out, blocking three attempts to secure the title for the Sydney club.
WA talent Nicholas Elphick was rewarded for his stellar campaign, by being named in the tournament All Star Team for 2018.
The Fremantle Marlins ensured it would be a successful weekend for both teams by winning their third place play-off match with Sydney outfit Drummoyne.
In a tense battle, very little separated the teams throughout and in the end the final margin was just a single goal, falling in favour of the West Australians.
The women’s title was taken out by UNSW West Killer Whales – who claimed a 5-4 win over Sydney Uni Lions.
Marlins’ representative Erin Redbond was selected in the women’s 2018 All Stars Team.
