The lowest water levels in Avon Descent history made things tough going for competitors during last weekend’s event.

Despite the contemptuous weather served by old man winter, there were still some positive results from the competing WAIS paddlers.

Brendon Sarson (Karrinyup) comfortably won the Long Plastic Surf Ski class and finished a highly credible seventh overall, earning praise from WAIS head coach Ramon Andersson.

“Sarson’s result was a great achievement considering he was in a slower craft weighing seven or eight kilograms more than the kayaks that finished in front of him, Andersson said.

“The course required many portages along the way, which obviously restricts the heavier crafts.”

The South African dominance in the event continued with former World Marathon Champion Hank McGregor taking out the race victory.

WAIS athlete Daniel Bowker was part of the winning four person relay team, leaving WAIS with two divisional champions for the 2010 event.
