The Australian Stingers have defeated Spain 12-8 to claim a bronze medal at the 2009 World League Finals in Kirishi, Russia.
WAIS-AIS athletes Glencora Ralph and Zoe Arancini were both part of the squad that won a second succussive medal at the international tournament and sets the team up well for an assault at next month’s world championships in Rome.
Australian Stingers coach Greg McFadden was pleased with the defensive qualities his side showed in holding out a talented Spanish outfit.
“It was a fine effort to shut out the Spanish considering the high foul count against. The girls showed professionalism and the result was a good pointer to the FINA World Championships in Rome next month,” he said.
The bronze medal made up for the disappointment of again suffering a one goal defeat to the USA in the semi-finals, after the Stingers missed out on the gold medal match at the 2008 Beijing Olympics under similar circumstances.
Spain made the early running in the third place playoff taking a 3-1 lead, before the Australian attack found its rhythm to level scores 4-4 at the first break.
The Stingers continued to press in the second term, and further goals to Knox and Rippon helping Australia to a 7-5 half-time lead.
Spain mounted a late charge but couldn’t draw level, which again handed the Stingers the initiative to pull away for a final four goal margin at 12-8.
WAIS scholarship holder Zoe Arancini created a small piece of history by becoming the first Australian to join her mother on an international podium. Wendy Meloncelli won gold at the 1984 FINA World Cup and 1986 FINA World Championships.
