The WA Flames have found themselves in unchartered waters after the completion of the third round of the Gilleys Shield National League.

They stand alone for the first time on top of the points ladder, one game clear of Queensland and four games clear of New South Wales. The Flames previously shared top with NSW after the first round and again shared top with QLD after round two but have now elevated themselves one game clear in front after round three.

Winning five to six matches in Melbourne was the teams target for round three and after dropping the first game 2-0 to ACT it took a tremendous effort from the team to win their last five games with three (NSW, VIC, SA) of those games inflicting the mercy rule (7 runs ahead after 5 innings played).

The last match proved the pinnacle of the weekend coming from behind twice to beat QLD 5-4 and take top of the National League points honours.

WAIS athletes Chelsea Forkin, Jodie Stevenson & Leigh Godfrey were noticeable standouts but other WAIS athletes Michelle Andrew, Ash Medwin, Verity Long-droppert and Chermai Clews also contributed with distinction such after providing game changing outcomes in clutch situations.

Backing up from the U19 National Champs the week before were WAIS athletes Annalyse Lister, Rebecca Crosby & Emily Sharp, who all contributed to the teams recent success.

WAIS Head softball Coach Kere Johanson praised his side’s consistency but warned improvements will still be needed to claim the Gilleys Shield.

“What has impressed me has been the consistency of our performances at each round so far,” Johanson said. “Winning 14 of the first 18 games is a credit to the team and the way they have progressed with their mental toughness.”

“We still need to raise our sights higher if we want to become National Champions and we are still along way fromthat, but for now we will enjoy this week at the top of the National League ladder,” Johanson said.

Round four of the Gilleys Shield will be played in Blacktown, NSW starting February 18.
