WAIS Hockey Athletes Selected for the Junior World Cup
Three Western Australian women’s hockey players have recently been selected as part of the Australian Junior World Cup squad set to compete in Santiago, Chile in November.
WAIS scholarship athletes Aleisha Power and Georgia Wilson, along with Karri Somerville, were announced in the squad on Tuesday after being selected by head coach, Tim White and the national selection panel.
The trio secured their place in the squad following a number of outstanding performances throughout 2016.
Tim White said “obviously it was a very difficult selection process given the number of talented athletes we have in the under 21’s age group, however we have looked at performances from across the year and feel that the athletes we have chosen are ones who will give us the best chance of success at the Junior World Cup.”
Athletes were assessed on a number of occasions including the National Futures Camp, the Junior World Cup qualification camp, the Junior World Cup Qualifier on the Gold Coast, the Under 21 Australian Championships in Sydney, the National Training Centre Challenge in Canberra, the National U/21’s England tour and the Australian Hockey League.
The 18 player squad will depart for Santiago on Sunday the 20th of November and will now commence a six-week training period in the lead up.
