WAIS athletes performed exceptionally well at the National Camps Selection Trials held at the new Coomera course on the Gold Coast over the weekend.
Racing with a very strong side wind and white caps from the right hand side, WAIS athlete Reece Baker (Marmion) prevailed to score a courageous win with WAIS training partner Brendon Sarson (Karrinyup) powering home to finish a close second.
The pair had a clear lead ahead of Glenn Rypp from SASI. WAIS athlete Daniel Bowker (Kingsley) paddled strongly to finish sixth whilst WAIS scholarship holder Brodie Holmes narrowly missed the eight man final after clocking a time just one tenth of a second outside in ninth.
WAIS Head Coach Ramon Andersson was very satisfied with the results saying, “It is now confirmed that Reece has returned to his best following shoulder surgery which is great to see. I am sure there is more there.”
“I was equally pleased with Brendon’s results as he has been having health issues since the tortuous Avon Descentin August and he only returned to full training two weeks before the event,” Andersson revealed.
This weekend will see Sarson and Baker take to the river and ocean where they will be title favourites for the popular Bay to Beach race from Mosman Bay to Cottesloe over a distance of 17km.
