Last weekend saw WAIS paddlers race in the third stage of the State Regatta Series at Champion Lakes.
WAIS athlete Alana Nicholls (City Beach) was the stand out performer winning four races, being the K1 200m and 500m and teaming up with former WAIS athlete Rachel Simper to convincingly win the K2 200m and 500m.
In the men’s events Steve Bird (Mt Pleasant) won the K1 200m closely followed by the ever improving Brodie Holmes with Reece Baker (Marmion) close behind in third.
In the K2 200m Bird teamed with Reece Baker who was subbing in for regular partner Jesse Phillips who is still working his way back from injury.
In the K1 1000m Brendon Sarson (Innaloo) and Reece Baker continued their close tussles this season with Sarson on this occasion prevailing after taking the lead in the closing stages to win by about 30 cm. Sarson and Baker then teamed up to record a comfortable win in the K2 1000m.
This weekend will see most of the WAIS paddlers take to the ocean in the Spirit Coastal Challenge from Fremantle to Sorrento over a distance of 25km.
Again we expect a tight battle between Sarson and Baker, however Lockie(Binjali) Cooke (Mosman Park) is improving in this form of racing and will be fighting to get in the top three.
