WAIS Sailors Compete in Hyeres World Cup
Five members of the WAIS Sailing Program are currently competing at the Hyeres World Cup in France.
With finals still to be contested, WAIS athletes are currently returning some strong performances, with Matthew Wearn particularly impressive in the men’s laser class.
Wearn currently sits fifth, second ranked of the Australian Sailing Team contingent, with Australian teammate Tom Burton leading the fleet. Wearn’s WAIS training partner Luke Elliot currently sits 39thoverall.
WAIS athlete David Gilmour currently sits 22ndoverall in the men’s 49er class, competing alongside Rhys Mara. Fellow Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen occupy seventh place.
Former Youth 420 world champion and WAIS scholarship holder Carrie Smith is continuing the step up to the senior 470 class, and currently sits 41st overall, having earlier in the week ranked 34th. Smith is partnering Sarah Cook in competition.
WAIS athlete Cailtin Elks, partnering Tess Lloyd is 19thoverall in the women’s 49er FX class, following some impressive racing.

In local sailing news, the Mandurah Easter Regatta was held over the weekend where all WAIS sailors performed well, winning their respective classes.
Mark Spearman claimed the Laser title, Emerson Carlberg and Lachy Gilmour won the men’s 420, Nia Jerwood and Lisa Smith were second in the class and first women. Alistair Young was first in the Laser Radial with Conor Nicholas just behind in second.
