Western Australian Institute of Sport water polo athletes have displayed the high level of talent within the squad after nine of its scholarship holders helped WA to second place at the recent National Under 20 Championships in Sydney.

WA lost just one round robin match to NSW (13-12) in the tournament and again fell the wrong side of the scoreboard against the host state in the final completing an impressive campaign which saw four WAIS athletes named in the Australian Under 20 squad.

Aaron Younger (Palmyra) was named player of the tournament whilst Daniel Lawrence (East Fremantle), Eddie Slade (Samson) and Joel Swift (East Fremantle) were all also included in the squad of 20.

The squad however has been made to tread water after Head Coach Mark Hubbard confirmed the final squad would be named in mid-May ahead of tournament and training camps to Europe in September.

“All of our camps have involved 25-30 players for the past few years so that’s resulted in the high standard group.

“However, players will be added or removed based on performances throughout the national league,” Hubbard said.

Earlier in January, WAIS athletes Aaron Younger, James Fannon (Bibra Lake), Perry Short (Cottesloe) and goal keeper Eddie Slade all featured for the Australian team at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.

The Australian team produced a fantastic effort to finish third behind the junior world champions Hungary and runners up Greece.
