WAIS paddlers excelled at last weekend’s International Ruhr Regatta in Bochum Germany as part of a strong Australian U23 Team.

New WAIS athlete Jaymee Lee Martin (Willeton) had an excellent regatta in her first Australian team representation, recording a comfortable win in the K1 500m and coming a narrow second to fellow Australian athlete Jacqui Beaver in the K1 200m.

Racing into a very strong headwind with white caps bouncing off the decks of the kayaks made for some very tough racing.

WAIS athlete Lochie Cooke (Mosman Park) also had a strong regatta teaming with fellow West Australian Brendan Rice to win the K2 1000m.

Cooke was totally pumped when speaking to WAIS Head Coach Ramon Andersson after the regatta saying,” We were one of the smallest crews there, but just went for it from the start. Considering the conditions the boat felt really good and coming into the final 250m we were able to kick strongly which allowed us to pull into the lead,” he said.
