A triple Olympian, Brian Glencross earned a world-wide reputation as an outstanding hockey player, representing Australia as a full-back in 93 international matches between 1964 and 1973.
A bronze medal at his first Olympic Games, in Tokyo in 1964, was followed by a silver medal in Mexico City four years later, when he was the leading goalscorer in the tournament with seven goals and scored Australia’s only goal in their 2-1 defeat by Pakistan in the final. His third Olympic appearance was in Munich in 1972.
A powerful and accurate corner-hitter, Glencross captained Australia from 1968 to 1973, earning the respect of opposing players for his robust tackling and close checking in defence.
In 1968 he had the distinction of becoming the first Australian to be selected in an unofficial world team and was also voted the W.A. Sports Federation’s Sportsman of the Year.
Glencross, who always set himself high standards of fitness and trained hard to achieve them, established a reputation for reliability and courage in defence.
He appeared in 85 consecutive international matches for Australia between 1964 and 1972 without missing any through injury, a tribute to his consistency and dedication to fitness.
Glencross was the cornerstone of the Australian defence in the inaugural World Cup tournament in Barcelona in 1971 and represented his country on six overseas tours. He was a stalwart of W.A. teams for 20 years, starting with the colts in 1959, moving to the seniors from 1961 to 1977 and then the State indoor side in 1977 and 1978.
