Craig Davies’ national and international hockey career spanned fifteen years from 1977 to 1992. He was selected for three Olympic Games in 1980, 1984 and 1988. Davies played 193 games for Australia including the historic World Cup series in England in 1986.
An automatic selection in Australian teams from 1977 to 1991, Davies captained the side from 1987 to 1990.
During his career Davies was required to make the transition from grass to surfaces to synthetic and achieved this successfully. His play was characterized by relentless tackling and powerful and accurate passing.
By concentrating on a strict regime of physical fitness, Davies had a long and decorated career. His preparation for matches was meticulous and attention to detail and training formidable. For several years he was the designated penalty corner hitter for both Western Australia and Australia.
When Davies was a prominent player in Western Australia the state enjoyed its greatest period of national domination. Likewise the Australian team led world rankings for most of his playing life. To captain both Australia and Western Australia at that time to testimony to level of esteem he had gained from his peers and the leaders of hockey.
Arguably one of the finest defensive players produced in Western Australia few who watched Davies play will forget his tenacity and calm efficiency as he controlled and mastered the best of opposition attackers.
