20-year-old WAIS swimmer Ben Popham has claimed gold in the 100m freestyle S8 on the opening day of competition at the 2020 Paralympic Games.

Fifth fastest after the opening 50 metres, Popham turned on the afterburners to chase the field down and stop the clock in 57.37 seconds, nearly half a second clear of his closest rival.

“Australia is having another mining boom. It is a bit of a gold rush and I’m loving it!,” an elated Popham said of a successful opening day for the Australian Paralympic Team.

“We’re a big believer in just sitting back and letting things happen and trying to stay relaxed and not over think it. I think it is really easy, especially at Paralympic and Olympic Games to become over aroused and that sort of plays in your head.

“To do double gold with Rohan [Crothers] he is one of my best mates and I saw him when I was in the warmup and oh my god, you couldn’t write a better story. I am so stoked!”

Popham will return to the pool in the 400m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle and medley relays.
