Courtney Bruce will be back in Fever colours in 2013

The West Coast Fever has added one of Australia’s brightest young talents to its roster for 2013 after securing the services of 19 year-old Courtney Bruce.

The Western Australian Institute of Sport athlete and Australian 21U National Squad Member will make her return to the ANZ Championship next month following a previous one year stint with the Fever in 2011.

“I’m so excited to be returning to the Fever – it’s the team I grew up watching” said Bruce.

“It is overwhelming for things to happen this quickly, but I feel a lot more mature than when I last played for Fever and I can’t wait to start learning from Norma and the girls.”

Speaking of Courtney’s rise to the top, Head Coach Norma Plummer said she was excited about the young player’s potential.

“Courtney has a great natural instinct and good athletic ability whilst being able to always read for the intercept.

She’s an intelligent player and will be more than capable of picking up the pace and tactics of the other Fever girls.

Courtney has had plenty of experience training with us, as she has always come into my sessions when back home from the AIS.”

Bruce was a standout at last year’s 21U National Championships held in Perth, and was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The first chance to see Courtney and the West Coast Fever of 2013 live in action will be at the 2013 President’s 12 game on Sunday 17th February. This match will also give everyone a chance to celebrate the career of Susan Fuhrmann following her retirement from netball earlier this week.

The game starts at 12.20pm, with doors opening at 11.15am. Members are able to collect their 2013 Fever Membership packs at the game, and tickets for non-Members are only $10 – for more information visit www.westcoastfever.com.au.

In other news out of the WAIS netball program, three athletes have been selected to travel to New Zealand this month to play in an AIS squad against some local ANZ Championship franchise teams.

Kaylia Stanton, will take up a full AIS scholarship in 2013, whilst Numi Tupaea and Denise Shepley have been invited to travel with this squad, and will also be members of their respective U/age national squads at camps being held in Canberra from February 18-24.
