The Western Australian Institute of Sport congratulations Caitlin Bassett on a highly successful career following her retirement from netball.

The long-time WAIS scholarship holder and graduate, represented Australia at the highest level on 102 occasions, spanning over a decade having made her debut in 2008 against England.

Bassett’s career highlights include victories at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cup and a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Her trophy cabinet also includes silver medals from the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 World Cup.

In 2017 Bassett was named captain of the Diamonds, a role she held through to 2021, and which saw her lead the team at a Commonwealth Games and World Cup and success at the Constellation Cup.

Her shooting accuracy was world renowned, and her career 2863 goals came at a remarkable 90 per cent accuracy.

“Netball has been such a huge part of my life and I still pinch myself looking back at the incredible experiences I’ve had both on and off the court,” Bassett said.

“While it isn’t the fairy tale ending I wanted and I am disappointed, the support I have received over the last 18 months, in particular, has been amazing.

“This sport has given me so much and I still plan on being involved. I want to give back and help others navigate the challenges I have overcome and continue to grow the game.”

Outside her national team responsibilities she played with the Perth Orioles, later the West Coast Fever from 2005-2016 before joining the Sunshine Coast Lightning between 2017-18, where she won the Super Netball title in 2018 and finished her career with stints at the Sydney Giants and Wiakato Bay of Plenty Magic.
