The Hockeyroos have missed a chance to stamp their authority over their group in the Commonwealth Games after letting a lead slip to draw 1-1 with South Africa.

With AIS-WAIS athletes Jayde Taylor, Ashleigh Nelson, Shelly Liddelow and Fiona Boyce all representing the Australians, all appeared on track after seven minutes when Emily Hurtz converted an opportunity to put the Hockeyroos ahead.

The game turned for the Aussies however, when Hurtz was forced off after dislocating her left shoulder.

To compound Australia’s problems, Marsha Mareschia capitalised on an opportunity to level for the South Africans just before half-time.

A scrappy second half ensued with neither side able to create a meaningful chance on goal, meaning the match ended in stalemate, with South Africa staying on top of Group A by virtue of their superior goal difference.

Australia’s next clash is with Scotland on Saturday.
