Trent Mitton was on the scoresheet again for Australia

The Kookaburras have recorded their second victory of their Commonwealth Games campaign, defeating host nation India 5-2 in an entertaining affair.

The first half was a high quality affair, with the home team keen to ensure a contest was offered in front of a raucous crowd at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

Despite India’s best efforts however it was the Australian’s that scored the opening two goals inside the first ten minutes, WAIS athlete Trent Mitton joining Des Abbott on the scoresheet as the Kookaburra’s jumped to a 2-0 lead.

It didn’t take too long though for the crowd to be in raptures as India hit back with a field goal in the 12 minute, making it 2-1. A one goal lead for the men in green and gold remained for the first half as high quality, end to end hockey ensued.

The second half started where the first left off with India keen to counter attack with overhead passing while Australia pressed hard to keep the ball in their attacking 25.

The pressure eventually took its toll and the Kookaburras sealed the match with a stunning 10 minutes, scoring three goals in that space of time, kicked off by an impressive penalty corner variation to Eddie Ockenden in the 48th minute.

Australia didn’t add to their five goals from that point but India gave their fans one final chance for a cheer with a penalty corner after the final siren seeing the score finish at 5-2.

The Kookaburras’ next match is on Saturday against Pakistan.
