Final Olympic Prep for Smith and Ryan

WAIS sailor Carrie Smith and her crew Jaime Ryan will use the World Cup event in Weymouth as a final competition tune-up ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Smith and Ryan, who were officially selected for August’s Games last month, will compete at the venue of the 2012 London Olympics looking to assess their form against several of the crews that they will face in Brazil.

A lack of wind however, scuppered race plans on day one of competition, with only athletes in the RS:X men’s class able to get any competition underway.

Ryan however, said the delays would not change their approach to the week.

“It been a pretty long day of waiting around.”

“This is our first regatta since being selected and the last regatta before the Olympic Games. Not everyone in our class is here, but there are quite a few of the top teams, so we’ll use this as a chance to gauge ourselves against the fleet,” she said.

Racing is now scheduled to run from Thursday through Sunday, with Smith set to be joined in action by fellow WAIS scholarship athletes in the laser class.

Matt Wearn is one of four Australian entrants in the laser fleet, with Western Australian Luke Elliott also competing.
