#GC2018 Day Four: Swimmers Continue to Add to Medal Tally

Published On: 8 April 2018

As Australia’s medal tally continues to climb so does that of our Western Australian athletes with our swimmers earning another two medals at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre tonight.

SWIMMING

30-year-old Western Australian swimmer Holly Barratt has won her first Commonwealth Games medal after coming second in the final of the Women’s 50m Butterfly.

It was a clean sweep for Australia with Cate Campbell in first, Barratt in second and Madeline Groves in third.

After qualifying for the finals yesterday, Barratt returned to the pool today for the final where she finished in 25.67 seconds to win silver.

Broome born Zac Incerti contested the final of the Men’s 50m Backstroke this evening, finishing third in a time of 25.06 seconds.

His bronze medal finish follows an exceptional lead in to the final where Incerti qualified with the third fastest time on Games debut.

After winning bronze in the final of the Women’s 400m Individual Medley on Thursday Blair Evans returned to the pool today to contest the Women’s 200m Individual Medley.

Coming fifth in her heat, Evans scraped into the final to swim out of lane eight.

Improving her time from this morning by one second the individual medley swimmer charged home to finish in fifth.

SHOOTING

2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Laura Coles made her first appearance of the Games today, competing in the Women’s Skeet.

Unfortunately today was not Coles’ day as she finished ninth in the preliminary round missing out on a finals appearance.

CYCLING -TRACK

Cameron Meyer contested his second event on the track today with great success.

After coming fourth in his heat of the qualifying of the Men’s 40km Points Race he progressed through to the final finishing again in fourth place, with 50 points.

NETBALL

The Australian Diamonds have made it three from three defeating South Africa 60-38 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight.

WA’s Caitlin Bassett played the first half of the match in goal shooter where she shot 20 from 23 goals at 87%.

Courtney Bruce was brought in to the game following the main break and proved the team change to be invaluable.

Bruce finished the match with four defensive rebounds, two intercepts and one deflection.

Having made a strong start to their Commonwealth Games campaign the Diamonds are set to take on Fiji tomorrow afternoon.

HOCKEY

The Kookaburras have taken their second win of the Games against Scotland.

Flying out of the gates early, the Australians entered quarter time with a 4-0 lead, a margin that the Scottish side were unable to recover from.

Australia continued on to score two more goals, one in the second and one in the third before going quiet in the fourth.

Scotland managed to slip their way through the home side’s defence in the second term to score their one and only goal for the game.

Strong efforts from the whole Kookaburras team, including a goal from Western Australia’s Aran Zalewski, saw the side finish on top, 6-1.

Tomorrow will mark the start of the action for boxer Caitlin Parker who is set to make her Commonwealth Games debut whilst the competition will continue in the swimming, netball and basketball.
