#GC2018 Day Two: Throssell Powers Home to Claim Bronze

Commonwealth Games debutant, Brianna Throssell has claimed bronze on the second day of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

SWIMMING

Throssell began her campaign to the finals yesterday where she breezed home to win her heat in the morning and then backed up her efforts with a strong swim in the semi-final, coming third place and securing her spot in today’s final.

Racing out of lane eight Brianna powered to the wall producing the swim of her life.

After touching in second place at the half way mark the butterfly swimmer kept up her pace finishing the race in 57.30 seconds, over one second faster than her semi-final swim.

BASKETBALL

The Australian Boomers opened their campaign today with a convincing win over Canada, 95-55.

Dominant throughout the whole game the Boomers outscored their opposition by an average of ten points every quarter.

Western Australia’s Cam Gliddon did his part in contributing to the team’s victory, adding eight points to the scoreboard and ripping in two offensive and one defensive rebound.

CYCLING – TRACK

After winning gold in the team pursuit yesterday Sam Welsford returned to the track today to compete in the Men’s 4000m Individual Pursuit.

Qualifying fifth fastest in a time of 4:13.595 Welsford narrowly missed out on a place in the bronze final. 

 

NETBALL

Courtney Bruce, Caitlin Bassett and the Australian Diamonds have continued their winning ways defeating Barbados 79-24.

Bruce started the game in goal keeper helping her team to a 23-point half time lead.

She was then moved to the bench before returning to the court in goal defence for the fourth, finishing the match with two intercepts and seven deflections.

Caitlin Bassett entered the game at half time, contributing 26 goals to her team’s total.

Day three of the Games is set to be a big one for our Western Australian athletes with action in the swimming, men’s hockey and the men’s basketball.
