Gilmour Nets Silver Medal in Medemblik

David Gilmour and his crewmate Joel Turner have won a silver medal at the Medemblik Regatta in the Netherlands.

The duo won four of the final seven races, including victory in the double points medal race, to catapult themselves to a podium finish in the 49er class.

The result is a timely confidence boost for the pair ahead of the World Championships which will be held in Hempel, Denmark from July 30 – August 12.

In Medemblik, Gilmour and Turner enjoyed a largely consistent week of racing, but did record seventh and 10th place finishes on their card which left them vulnerable of missing the podium heading into the backend of the regatta.

Those concerns were alleyed with consecutive bullets (race wins) and a third place effort in the final three fleet races, consolidating their position leading into the medal round.

Gilmour said the week had been a valuable experience and hoped they could take that form into their next competition venture in Kiel.

Gilmour’s younger brother Lachy Gilmour, competing with fellow West Aussie Ryan Donaldson managed a 14th place effort – that included three podium finishes.

In the laser radial class, WA talent Jacinta Ainsworth claimed seventh place overall, in a field of 17 boats.
