Western Australia’s Ryan Bailie has produced a sprint finish to claim bronze for Australia in the triathlon mixed relay at the Strathcylde Country Park in Glasgow.

The medal was Australia’s first in the triathlon events, and came off the back of an incredible final 100m from Bunbury’s Bailie, who produced an explosive finish to overhaul Canada’s Andrew Yorke with the finish line in sight.

Such was Bailie’s speed to the line he nearly caught South Africa’s Richard Murray, finishing only a second behind the silver medallists.

Bailie was joined in the Australian mixed relay squad by Emma Moffatt, Aaron Royle and Emma Jackson, with the Aussies completing the course in 1:14:13, with gold going to England’s (1:13:24) all conquering team of Vicky Holland, Jonathon Brownlee, Jodie Stimpson and Alistair Brownlee, with the English winning all three gold medals on offer in Glasgow.

Moffatt kick started Australia’s mixed relay campaign, covering the 250m swim, 6km bike and 1.5km run in 19:29 handing over to Royle with Australia in seventh place. Royle managed to advance the team to fifth overall, before a very quick run leg from Jackson transferred Australia over to Bailie in third place.

Bailie had slipped to fourth early in the run, before powering home in a thrilling finale, where he was mobbed by his teammates upon crossing the line as they celebrated their medal success.
