Natalie Medhurst shoots for goal in the Diamonds match with Wales

The Australian Diamonds have defeated Wales 63-36 in their opening match of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The Australians held a narrow one goal lead at quarter time, but a 22-8 second quarter surge, blew the match wide open for the Diamonds to ensure the 2010 silver medallists will head into Saturday’s clash with heavyweights England in full confidence.

Australia opted for the Western Australian shooting combination of Caitlin Bassett (GS) and Natalie Medhurst (GA) for their opening match, with the pair producing a polished performance but the Diamonds in truth, were dominant in each third, running over their Welsh counterparts with faster transition play, and strong defensive zoning.

After opening a 32-17 lead at half-time, Australia was able to clear its bench over the second half, allowing the title challengers to avoid injuries and gain valuable playing minutes throughout their squad. Bassett top scored for the Australians with 24 goals before making way for Caitlin Thwaites.

The team faces a much sterner test against world number 3 England in their second match, with a win again their Pool B foes going a long way towards a spot in the semi-finals and a shot at the medals in Glasgow.

In the earlier Pool A match, Malawi accounted for Northern Ireland 71-50.
