WA’s Luke Durbridge has finished ninth in the men’s road time trial at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Durbridge posted a time of 49:57.73 to finish outside the medals in his first ride since completing his maiden Tour de France campaign last weekend for GreenEDGE Cycling.

The former U23 Road Time Trial World Champion crossed the opening time check third fastest, and had an average speed of 48.796km across the first half of the course, but he fatigued in the second half, particularly after being caught by eventual gold medallist Alex Dowsett of England – who posted a winning time of 47:41.78.

Australian Rohan Dennis briefly held gold medal position after being the third last rider to cross the finish line. His time of 47:51.08 had appeared tough to beat, but Dowsett covered the final check point in quick time to steal the win and break Australian hearts.

The men’s and women’s road races will be contested on Sunday.
