WA swimmers Sally Hunter (100m breast) and Tommaso D’Orsogna (100m fly) have narrowly missed medals in their finals at the Commonwealth Games overnight, with the duo finishing fourth and fifth in their respective swims.

Hunter, who claimed silver in the women’s 200m breast earlier in the meet, touched home in 1:08.26 in the 100m final for fourth place, only fractionally shy of bronze, which went to Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson (1:08.14). Gold was taken by England’s Sarah Taylor (1:06.35) with silver going to Australian Lorna Tonks (1:07.34).

Relay gold medallist D’Orsogna was hoping to add a third medal to his collection, but finished fifth in the final of the 100m fly, in a time of 52.45.

Olympic champion Chad le Clos (RSA) won gold in 51.29, with the minor medals won by Singapore’s Joseph Schooling (51.69) and England’s Adam Barrett (51.93).

WAIS swimmer Kat Downie takes to action in the women’s 200m IM SM10 tonight, with qualifying from 5.52pm and the final on at 3.03am (Jul 30).

Australia tops the swimming medal standings, with 17 gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze for a haul of 49 medals over all.
