The Kookaburras have survived a stern test against India to remain undefeated at the 2014 Commonwealth Games following a 4-2 win at the Glasgow International Hockey Centre.

The Australians skipped out to a 3-0 lead heading towards half-time after a tense opening 15 minutes had kept the world champions at bay.

The deadlock was broken when Chris Ciriello converted a penalty corner and this goal was quickly extended through goals to Jacob Whetton and Simon Orchard.

Any thoughts of another Kookaburras rout however were checked on the stroke of half-time when Indian drag-flick specialist Rupinder Singh converted from a penalty corner to give India hope of an upset.

Those hopes were dramatically raised when Ramandeep Singh found himself on the end of an attack to score their second goal, which pegged the Australians’ lead to one goal.

India continued to press for an equalizer and had a couple of opportunities but was dealt a blow when Chris Ciriello scored his second – this time via a penalty stroke.

Australia appeared happy to defend its territory from this point on, with the Kookaburras continuing to look dangerous on the counter attack. Despite chances for either side, the fulltime siren was reached with the score at 4-2 to the Australians – who remain undefeated and on track to progress to the semi finals.

WA athletes Fergus Kavanagh, Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski and Kiel Brown all played for the Kookaburras in the match.
