WA’s Jess Pengelly has finished seventh in the final of the women’s 400m IM in Glasgow, won by local favourite Hannah Miley.

Pengelly achieved her pre-Commonwealth target of making the final at the Tollcross Swimming Complex, clocking a time of 4:47.00 to finish behind Miley, England’s Aimee Willmott and Australian teammate Keryn McMaster.

Miley won the hosts’ first gold medal of the Games, setting a new Commonwealth Record (4:31.76) with a blistering final 100m in the freestyle leg to overhaul Willmott.

There was disappointment later in the swimming session, with WA’s Sally Hunter narrowly missing qualification for tonight’s final of the 50m breaststroke.

Hunter’s time of 31.60 was only fast enough for tenth spot, missing the top eight times to progress to the final.

Hunter however, still has the 100m and 200m breaststroke events, which are her favoured swims, meaning Glasgow finals, are still firmly on the agenda for the South Australian based swimmer.

Day two action from Tollcross includes WA’s Tommaso D’Orsogna in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, with the now Brisbane based dasher a chance to win WA’s first medal from the Glasgow Games.
