Western Australian powerlifter Ben Wright has made his Commonwealth Games debut, finishing 10th in the final of the men’s heavyweight.

Wright was giving upwards of 15kg competition bodyweight to some of his rivals, and it proved to be a field in which he was out of his depth at this early stage of his career.

He did however, perform brilliantly, lifting 163.0kg and 167.0kg from his first two attempts before missing at 171.0kg. Wright’s adjusted weight, was scored at 152.1kg.

Wright’s Australian teammate Leigh Skinner finished one spot ahead in ninth, with a total of 155.7kg.

Gold was won by Nigerian Abdulazeez Ibrahim – who lifted 197.0kg, silver went to India’s Rajinder Rahelu (180.5kg) and bronze went to Malaysian Jong Yee Khie (178.0kg).
