Perth One Day Regatta a Big Hit

Published On: 28 October 2010

Perth 2011 together with City of Perth held a great one day regatta off the Barrack St Jetty, on the Swan River for Lasers and RSX windsurfers. It was held on Sunday and the weather was true to form with a great south westerly breeze up to 20 knots.

On the shallow waters of Perth, and with the start line very close to the grassy banks, it proved fun for spectators and sailors with thrills and spills! Capsizes were plentiful in the gusty conditions, and with all the boats crowding into the bottom mark, there were some tight situations for the sailors to try and get out of!

The day was won by Thor Schoenhoff in the Laser full rig, followed by WAIS athlete, Matthew Wearn who finished on equal points but 2nd on countback. This was a day for consistency, with all races to count, and Andrey Qintero from Colombia had one difficult race, finishing 10th andleft the prize money toThor and Matt.

In the Laser Radial, WAIS athletes Tristan Brown finished 1st and Mark Spearman 3rd overall.

The RSX was won by Santiago Grillo from Colombia, with Fremantle Sailing Club member, Tim Gourlay finishing 2nd.

This weekend we have the Indian Ocean Classic regatta being held out of Fremantle Sailing Club and it is looking like it will be the biggest entry ever, with Lasers and RSX also being contested by the sailors in the Emerging Nations Programme, as well as the Singaporean team that is here training in strong winds in the lead up to the Asian Games.

The regattas are proving to be great training for the sailors in the lead up to the Perth International Regatta in November, the test event for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

Thanks for all the support,
