Western Australian Institute of Sport rhythmic gymnast Amy Quinn has qualified for the Australian Commonwealth Games team after impressing at the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne.

The 16 year-old produced a highly consistent display, to win silver in the All Around, as well as further silver in the Hoop and Ball finals, before adding bronze in the Clubs and Ribbon finals.

The results earned Quinn selection onto the three-strong women’s rhythmic section of the Australian gymnastics team, where she will be joined by Queenslander Danielle Prince and NSW’s Jaelle Cohen.

Quinn will make her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, and demonstrated evidence of her bright future in the sport with a strong display in the All Around final, scoring 54.250 for second place behind Prince.

The Applecross resident posted 13.300 in the Hoop apparatus final and 12.950 in the Ball final to finish second behind Cohen (13.750) and Prince (13.400 respectively, with further scores of 12.850 in the Clubs final and 13.350 in Ribbon for third place in both events.

Australian Commonwealth Games Association CEO Perry Crosswhite predicted another successful campaign for Australia’s rhythmic team after the 2010 team – that contained former WAIS athlete Janine Murray – won a large haul of medals in Delhi.

“In 2010 our rhythmic gymnasts secured five medals with three of those gold. In addition to team gold, Australia won the individual all-around and a gold and two silver medals on individual apparatus,” he said.

“We look forward to Jaelle, Amy and Danielle making a strong contribution to the Australian team performance in Glasgow and on behalf of the ACGA I congratulate them on their selection.”
