Crunch time: Robin Jeffery will make his world championship debut in Spain this month

Australia’s canoe slalom team is completing their final preparations ahead of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships which start this Thursday at La Seu D’Urgell, Spain.

Two Western Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holders will be flying the Aussie flag in the men’s C1, with Olympic bronze medallist Robin Bell competing alongside emerging talent Robin Jeffery, who will make his world championship debut in Spain.

The Australian squad enjoyed a solid World Cup campaign earlier in the year and have retained the remainder of the team that competed at World Cup 3 with the squad now looking to build upon their performances earlier in the season.

Head Coach Mike Druce said all paddlers are ready for the peak event of the 2009 season.

“We have had a really good preparation period and everyone is eager to translate their training performances into strong racing.”

“As always the competition will be very difficult but we are happy with how we have prepared for the event.”

Robin Bell will be looking to follow strongly in the footsteps of his Beijing success, with the WAIS IASP athlete a former world champion in the C1 field.

Jeffery earned his spot in the national squad after impressing at national titles at the start of the year. Jeffery was featured in the latest Without Compromise edition, to read more about Jeffery’s involvement in slalom canoe click here.
