Silver Success for Roberts in Serbia

Jaime Roberts has won a silver medal in the K2 200m at World Cup 3 in Belgrade in a career best effort.

World Cup 3 represented Roberts’ second international hit-out of the season and she partnered Jo Brigden-Jones to strong effect as the duo – racing together for the first time – surprised even themselves to take second place and a world cup medal.

“It’s caught me a bit by surprise. It’s pretty awesome to be up there on the podium and I definitely want to be up there again,” Roberts said.

“We nailed our start, and it just set up the race perfectly.”

Brigden-Jones relayed Roberts’ thoughts, admitting the result had exceeded pre-race expectations.

“It’s pretty crazy, I really didn’t expect it so it’s a bit of a bonus,” Brigden-Jones said.

“It was fun to do the K2 200. We’ve never done K2 together, so we’ve just been learning a bit each day.”

Roberts raced a busy schedule in Serbia, also competing in the K4 500m and K2 500m events.

The Australian crew of Roberts, Brigden-Jones, Alyce Burnett and Cat McArthur qualified for the final of the K4, posting a highly respectable seventh place effort.

Roberts partnered McArthur in the K2, with the pair taking second place in the B-Final.

The Australian team has now travelled home, with the squad for the 2017 World Championships in the Czech Republic in August, set to be announced in coming weeks.
