WAIS IASP athletes Kynan Maley and Robin Jeffery were both in action at the recent Oceania Championships in Penrith.

The West Australian pair competed in the C1 and combined to reach the final of the C2 program in the first of three selection races for the 2010 World Championships – which will be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia in September.

The competition fetched a high quality international field and in the C1 both Maley (11th) and Jeffery (14th) narrowly missed out on the final, with only the top ten ranked paddlers progressing through.

The C2 proved a different story however, with Maley and Jeffery producing a solid heat run to qualify eighth and earn a finals berth.

Due to the new race format of Canoe Slalom where all finalists start from scratch, Maley and Jeffery had a great opportunity to jump up the leader board. The pair had a much faster run but unfortunately incurred too many penalties to be competitive and had to settle for seventh place.

The second and third selection races will be held in Tasmania on the 6th and 7th of March.
