Throssell Aiming for Second World Title

Published On: 25 July 2019

Brianna Throssell will swim for a second world title tonight when the Australian women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team contests its World Championship final as top seeds.

The Aussie team of Throssell, Leah Neale, Madison Wilson and Kiah Melverton set the fastest morning qualifying time of 7:50.64 but will face stiff competition with the USA (7:51.58) and Russia (7:52.66) looming as most likely challengers.

Australia will be begin favourites for the title, with the team holding the added luxury of being able to bring in star teen Ariarne Titmus for the final.

The 2019 FINA World Titles in Gwangju, Korea are shaping as a career best meet for Throssell. The UWA-West Coast dasher has already claimed a maiden world championship crown in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, whilst she backed that effort up with a highly impressive fifth place finish in the final of the women’s 100m fly, which she achieved with a new personal best time of 57.09.

Throssell also set the third fastest qualifying time in the heats of the 200m fly, but she withdrew from the event as pre-planned to focus her full attention on the team’s 4x200m freestyle.

Also competing tonight for the green and gold will be Olympic Champion Kyle Chalmers in the final of the men’s 100m Freestyle, Cate Campbell and Emma McKeon will swim in the semi-final of the women’s 100m Freestyle, Matthew Wilson and Zac Stubblety-Cook in the 200m Breaststroke, Mitch Larkin in the final of the men’s 200m IM, Jenna Strauch in the women’s 200m Breaststroke semi-final.
