Throssell Set to Join Aus Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay Team on the Gold Coast

Brianna Throssell will earn a berth in Australia’s 4x100m women’s freestyle relay squad at April’s Commonwealth Games after she finished fourth in the 100m free final at the Selection Trials on the Gold Coast.

Having made previous representative teams as a butterfly specialist, Throssell made a big impact in the final to finish behind the Campbell sisters and Emma McKeon in fourth place.

Throssell was quickest off the blocks and took it up to her more fancied rivals in the opening lap. She was able to hold her pace in the second 50 and touched home in 54.19, well down on her prelim time of 54.80.

Cate Campbell won the national title in 52.37 ahead of Bronte Campbell in 52.96, with McKeon picking up bronze in 53.49.

Australia won gold in the women’s 4x100m free in Glasgow in 2014, breaking the world record in the process. It is expected that the Australian girls will again be favourites for gold on the Gold Coast in a month’s time.

Women’s 50m Fly Final:

Holly Barratt earned a silver medal in the final of the women’s 50m butterfly, which was also won by Cate Campbell.

Campbell was narrowly shy of her Australian record – set in the morning qualification – with only a gliding touch to the wall preventing her from bettering her own mark. She won gold in 25.51. Barratt was second in 25.94 and Madeline Groves earned bronze in 26.35.

Men’s 100m Breast Final:

Tommy Sucipto finished fifth in the final of the men’s 100m breaststroke that was won by Jake Packard.

Sucipto went out hard in the opening 50, reaching the turn in second place before flagging slightly over the back end. His final time of 1:00.65 was bettered by the podium trio of Packard (59.74), Matthew Wilson (1:00.10) and Liam Hunter (1:00.25), whilst Daniel Cave was fourth in 1:00.48.

Sucipto’s pet event – the men’s 50m breaststroke – is still ahead, and on the evidence shown last night, he will be in strong contention in that field.

Men’s 100m Free Final:

Zac Incerti has taken sixth place in the final of the men’s 100m freestyle, won by Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers.

In a thrilling final, it was the duo of Chalmers (48.16) and Jack Cartwright (48.60) who finished first and second, after the pair had swam from the outside lanes, having tied seventh fastest in qualifying, on 49.17.

Cam McEvoy took third place in 48.62, with Incerti matching his prelim time of 49.00 for sixth place.
