Matt Wearn competing at the 2013 European Laser Championships in Dublin

WAIS sailor Matt Wearn has finished seventh in the Laser European Championships in Ireland.

Wearn began the final day in 12th position, with an 11th and a fifth moving him up the leader board to finish seventh at his first Laser European Championship.

The final day however, wasn’t without some drama after the West Australian hit the top mark while in second place. The mistake had dropped him to 17th by the time he got to the bottom mark but he fought back exceptionally well, making up 13 places on the next beat.

At 17 years of age, Wearn appears set for a bright future in the sport and is currently internationally ranked fourth in the world.

Fellow Australian Ashley Brunning finished the week in 10th position following a ninth and a 32nd from the final two races.

Australian Ryan Palk had a 10th and an eighth on Friday to finish 15th overall, whilst compatriot Jared West was two places behind after a fourth and a 21st.
