WA Trio all in the Medals at FINA World Cup in Jinan

Grant Irvine, Holly Barratt and Nic Brown have all claimed medals in the second leg of the FINA World Cup circuit in Asia continuing WA swimmers’ good form across the meets.

Jinan, China played host to the international contingent from August 8-10, with Irvine collecting medals in the 200 and 100 metre fly, whilst Barratt was busy collecting medals in the fly and free with some backstroke finals to match.

Brown collected a silver medal in 200m fly final, which was won by Irvine in an impressive late season time of 1:55.94. Brown shadowed him to touch home in 1:57.32, with both men set to target this event for selection at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Having battled injury troubles earlier in the season, Irvine showed that in full form, he’s still a highly capable meet swimmer, taking a silver medal in the 100m fly, which was won by Szabasztian Szabo. Szabo’s time of 51.45 was 0.15 of a second quicker than Irvine’s.

Brown also swam in this final – taking sixth place overall (52.74). Irvine for his part, also featured in 50m fly final, where he took seventh place.

Holly Barratt looked a winner in the women’s 50m fly final, but for the long reach of superstar Cate Campbell – who out-touched her by just .03 of a second.

There were no such fine margins in the 50 free final, with Campbell irresistible in winning ahead of Michelle Coleman of Sweden in silver, and Barratt taking bronze in third.

For good measure, Barratt also tackled the 50 and 100 metre backstroke finals, taking sixth place in both swims. Katinka Hosszu (HUN) won the two-lapper, whilst Xiang Liu (CHN) saluted in the 50.
