Wearn Claims Palma Title

WA sailor Matt Wearn has defeated a fleet of close to 200 boats to win the Palma regatta in Spain.

Ahead of the first European World Cup campaign of the year, Wearn ensured his first European outing for 2018 was a productive one, winning the Palma – Trofeo Princess Sofia title in a fleet of 183 boats.

His week was typified by consistent racing, with Wearn earning eight top 10 finishes, which included three podium scores.

Overall, he tallied 55 points to claim gold ahead of Kiwi Sam Meech (64) and Croatian Tonci Stipanovic (98).

Tom Burton was the highest ranked of the remaining Australian competitors, taking sixth place after finishing second in the medal round.

The Hyeres World Cup in France commences on April 22.
