Williamson Elevated to Commonwealth Games Team

Published On: 5 April 2018

WA diver Teju Williamson has been elevated to the Commonwealth Games Diving Team following devastating news for South Australia’s Taneka Kovchenko requiring her to retire from diving with immediate effect.

Kovchenko was diagnosed with a relatively common genetic formation of her brain and scull, along with a hyper flexible neck that when in extension compresses on parts of her spinal chord.

The diagnosis, although common poses an unacceptable level of risk to Taneka as a diver eventuating in her decision to retire immediately.

Stepping up to fill her position, Teju will compete in both the 10m Platform event as and the Synchronised 10m Platform event alongside the experienced Melissa Wu.

Although late to join the team Williamson is no stranger having recently moved to Brisbane to train alongside several of Australia’s best, including fellow Western Australian Maddison Keeney.

You can catch Teju Williamson in action on the 11th of April where she will be competing in the Synchronised 10m Platform before taking part in the 10m Platform on the 12th of April.
