Friends Kim Mickle (Javelin), Brodie Holmes (Kayak), Olivia Vivian (Gymnastics) and Lyndsay Pekin (Athletics), all joined fellow WAIS shooter and Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Laura Coles this weekend, for a day of shooting at her home training center in Whiteman.

Having known each other from the Commonwealth Games, various tours and Ready for Rio gatherings, our well known WAIS athletes were all invited by Coles to come have a go at the sport she loves and does so well in.

Vivian and Pekin, having never shot a gun before were rather nervous for what they were in store for.

“I had no idea what to expect so pulling the trigger was pretty terrifying,” said Pekin

“In the days leading up to the activity I was extremely excited, but minutes before shooting the gun I got pretty nervous and followed Kim in her dibs to not shoot first,” explained Vivian

“Laura was an excellent teacher though and by some miracle I ended up hitting my first target out.”

Coles is weeks away from opening her own corporate shooting business called ‘Hot Shots Shooting’. It offers clay target shooting as a fun and exciting experience for corporate days, team building, bucks/hens parties or any special occasions.

“I’m very excited, it should be open for business in about 8 weeks,” said Coles.

“I really enjoyed having everyone come out and have a try.”

After a 15 shot warm-up, the four shooters tapped into their competitive nature, and went head to head in a 10 shot shootout with Holmes and Pekin drawing for the win with a score of 7/10.

“I couldn’t tell you what I did right or wrong so I think the 7/10 was pure beginners luck,” said Pekin.

“I was pretty happy with the draw to be honest, Lyndsay was going from strength to strength and I was a bit nervous about a shoot-off,” confessed Holmes

“I had so much fun I am now making it a part of my post kayaking plan.”
