Australia Draw With Hungary in Women’s Water Polo

Australia’s women’s water polo team has played out a thrilling seven all draw with Hungary at the Ying Dong Nataorium this afternoon.

The Stingers, featuring West Australians Emma Knox in goals and Gemma Beadsworth in attack, looked to have the match sewn up with a 7-6 lead and less than a minute on the clock.

Hungary had other ideas though and when the referee called a tough exclusion on Australia’s driver they managed to snatch the equaliser with only seconds remaining on the clock.

Australian coach Greg McFadden called a timeout to prep his side for the final attacking move but they were unable to score a winner in the four seconds left in the match.

Beadworth had a tough day in the water, going goalless from her six attempts, while Knox had a solid match in her first game of the Olympic tournament, making seven saves.

“It feels like we’ve been robbed,” McFadden said after the match to olympics.com.au.

“That was our most important match in the round…It’s total rubbish. We should be sitting pretty – the players tried their hearts out for four quarters and it all ended because of the ref.”

The Stingers’ next match is against The Netherlands on Friday afternoon.
