The Australian men's volleyball team celebrate their victory over Great Britain

Australia held out a determined host in Great Britain and made a statement with a straight sets victory in front of a large, vocal crowd at Earls Court on Day 4.

The Australians dominated the first set 25-15, but the second set was hard-fought after Great Britain took the lead for the first time at 12-11 and the match see-sawed.

Australia finally took control for six unanswered points to claim the second set 25-18.

Again in the third Australia let Great Britain back into the game after leading 20-13, before putting on another strong finish to win 25-20 and claim their first victory in the Olympic tournament.

“Tonight we showed everybody that we came here to compete, not just play volleyball, but really compete,” said Australian captain Igor Yudin.

“We really wanted to make a statement against Great Britain and we did that. There are still lots of things to improve on but we have time to fix things up playing every second day.”

Australian coach Jon Uriarte said his side was still “not quite fluent” and declared they still had “much more to offer.”

WAIS athlete Luke Smith was part of the Australian team for the match.

Australia’s next match will be on Thursday against world No. 9 ranked Bulgaria.
