Beadsworth and Knox Set Up USA Semi Date

West Australians Gemma Beadsworth and Emma Knox are one win away from a gold medal showdown after defeating China 12-11 in their Olympic quarter final in Beijing.

Australia will face off against the USA in the semi finals after producing a gutsy performance over China in front of a parochial home crowd.

Australia jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first quarter before being pegged back by the hosts with the first interval reached at 4-4.

In a see-saw battle, Australia’s depth of attacking talent gave it the edge with Kate Gynther scoring five goals and Mel Rippon bagging two.

China was the beneficiary of a couple of controversial 30 second exclusions for Australia, by twice scoring with the Stingers down a player. Australian Coach, Greg McFadden again vented furiously at officials, earning himself an official warning in the process.

Australia’s big match experience seemed to be a telling factor with the previously un-fancied Chinese unable to break down the Australian defence on key plays.

A win over the USA will be no mean fete, but the chance for a gold medal play-off should ensure the Aussie girls will be all action on Tuesday.
