WAIS taekwondo athlete Tina Morgan missed out on a bronze medal after a 4-1 points defeat against France’s Gwladys Epangue.

Morgan had been considered a strong chance for a medal before Beijing and faced a round of 16 bout against Canadian Karine Sergerie. Despite an even contest that finished 0-0, Sergerie was awarded the win on superiority verdict.

Morgan worked through the repechage rounds to set up a bronze medal bout against world silver medallist Epangue. Epangue proved the better fighter on the day with a well controlled performance that included some impressive combinations.

After overcoming a serious knee injury just to compete in Beijing, Morgan was disappointed not to bring home a medal.

“I really thought I’d be able to bring home a medal,” Morgan told aoc.com.

“Taekwondo is a pretty unpredictable sport. Regardless of whether you feel on top of the world or not, it can go either way.”

Morgan felt her bout with Sergerie was the decisive moment of her campaign, and told of her disappointment at losing on the judge’s verdict.

“That’s probably one thing I’ll remember for the rest of my life, to have the score be 0-0 and go into superiority and lose that way,” she said

“I’ll have a rest from training now and see what happens,” she said. “Obviously I would like to come back in 2012.”
